TL;DR

AI products fail in two predictable ways: they become a bag of demos without a coherent user model, or they ship fast and create trust debt around privacy and reliability.

An enterprise tech company needed to launch an AI Companion quickly. The timeline forced a different operating model: compress discovery, prototype fast, and write specifications that engineers could build immediately.

I helped translate ambiguous “AI ideas” into dev-ready specs and a coherent product direction grounded in real task contexts, with explicit trust boundaries for what the system would and would not do.

Industry Primer

“AI assistant” is not a feature, it is a product category. Users compare it to everything: ChatGPT, Claude, OS copilots like Copilot, workflow tools like Notion AI, and whatever they tried last week.

That means differentiation has to be defensible:

  • what runs locally vs in the cloud
  • what data is accessed and when
  • how the system communicates uncertainty

Context

The program needed fast alignment across stakeholders: design, engineering, and leadership all had different intuitions about what the AI Companion should be.

The primary risk wasn’t “missing a feature.” It was shipping something incoherent: impressive in a demo, unreliable in daily life, and hard to evolve into a real product.


Problem

Time compression made classic discovery impossible

We couldn’t spend weeks in exploration. Decisions had to be made with imperfect information, and the team needed artifacts that were buildable now, not inspirational later.

Trust boundaries were a product requirement

Users will trade convenience for control. Without explicit boundaries, an assistant becomes unpredictable, which is the fastest route to abandonment.


Solution

Decision 1: Build a discovery-to-spec loop

We ran a tight operating cadence:

  • rapid research and competitive teardown
  • prototype-driven validation
  • specs that defined constraints, edge cases, and UX behavior

Decision 2: Anchor around task contexts (not “AI features”)

Instead of “add more AI,” we framed the work around what users are trying to do:

  • analyze information across files
  • complete small device tasks quickly
  • discover relevant actions without hunting through settings

Decision 3: Make trust visible in the experience

We treated trust as UX—showing users exactly when data left the device, not burying it in a privacy policy no one reads:

  • clarify where processing happens
  • provide user control and predictability
  • avoid over-claiming capabilities

Results

The durable output wasn’t one screen. It was a cadence that shipped:

  • specs engineers could use without reinterpretation
  • a product direction leadership could defend
  • a clearer boundary between “vision” and “what can ship now”

What I'd Do Differently

I would introduce a lightweight “trust metric” earlier: a consistent way to measure perceived control, clarity, and predictability during evaluation. In AI products, trust compounds just like performance.
